I know you wonder what is wrong with you,
since you still carry the slimy, gloopy
strands of shame between your fingers, in
your hair, and where you hide yourself in the dark.
But that’s not who you are.
You deserve a warm bath.
I would love to give you the entire day in a red claw-foot bath tub,
outside, on a warm May day, protected by
bamboo fencing on all sides. Only the sky
can see you. And you choose to lay out your body,
unfurling your cramped leg muscles, loosen your
shoulders, which have been hunched forward to
protect your heart since you were 6.
Let the warm water bathe you, enfold you,
gently bob you, weightless.
After an hour, the water grows colder, so you let it go,
then fill up your tub with mildly hot water and bubbles.
So many bubbles. So many that you can slide under them
And not see your belly,
